Struggles were mostly faced during the set up of the company.
At the early stages of production, machinery displayed signs of wear and tear. These include deposits crusting in boiler tubes and black smoke escaping the chimneys. The humid tempera- ture in Singapore worsen the function of machinery and quality of the product. It was to the extend that "Cooking oil produced was neither clear nor fragrant. As for the soap bars, it was of very low quality". The reason for this was due to Lam Soon's cost saving venture which includes self-made machinery. However, Lam Soon managed to catch up on its industrial knowledge and manage- ment. Their extensive research and continuous upgrading was what contributed to their success. Today, Lam Soon is a well- known household brand of Singapore that is recognized for its quality. |
2008 RECESSION
The recessions crisis that Singapore faced in 2008 did not have much impact on Lam Soon since the products they are selling are
mostly basic essentials. Majority chose not to dine out as it would be expensive during that period of time. Hence, they cooked more instead, which resulted in the extensive use of Lam Soon's products. With or without crisis, consumers will continue to buy Lam Soon's product. |
